Non-turf practice system refurbishment – QE Olympic Park

Client: Spade Oak Contractors
Location: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Brief:
To construct a new non-turf cricket practice facility as part of the legacy phase of the London 2012 Olympics on behalf of Spade Oak Contractors. The specification was for a 9 lane, 28m long x 36.5m wide facility built using total-play’s tp365 ECB Approved Pitch System and the company’s Protection Tunnel netting. The facility was fully enclosed by a security fencing with total-play also responsible for constructing a carpeted coaching / viewing area around the nets measuring 1.5m wide

TP Solution:
In terms of project management, due to restrictions and timescales, this was one of the most challenging projects the total-play team has undertaken to date. Two day’s worth of inductions and health & safety training was completed prior to being allowed to start works was the first in a series of requirements; with other strict guidelines governing the movement of materials on and off site, excavation and restrictions on works being carried out above 3m.

Despite the inherent challenges, it was incredibly exciting to be part of the team delivering facilities as part of the London 2012 Olympic legacy. The total-play team worked around the clock to ensure the works were completed within a strict deadline linked to the site being handed over in preparation for the start of the Olympic Games, with the entire build complete within three weeks.

Throughout the project, total-play works were monitored and approved by a number of parties, including the immediate client, Spadeoak Contractors, Surfacing Standards – an independent sports turf consultant working on behalf of the main contractor Osbourne Contractors and Osbourne Contractors themselves who secured the works from the Olympic Delivery Agency.

This high level of scrutiny was successfully managed and the final product was well received and is now in regular use by the local community as part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
