The aim of the cricket cover is to keep the soil dry and the grass plant alive – but not all covers do this. The challenge arises because cricket pitches dry out in different ways:

• Evaporation – the loss of moisture from the soil surface caused by air circulation and sunlight
• Transpiration – the grass plant drawing out moisture from the soil profile
• Drainage – the movement of water through the soil profile due to gravity

Recent ECB research into pitch rolling shows that the use of a roller can only get the surface to a certain level of hardness; from then on the surface only becomes harder through drying. This, combined with the fact that changes in climatic conditions continuously challenge groundsmen, makes your choice of pitch cover critical in establishing and maintaining a pitch that meets performance standards.
