Non-turf cricket practice facility refurb

In January 2019, with its existing 20-year-old 2-lane practice facility no longer fit for purpose, historic side Old Hill CC was keen to refurbish the system to bring it up to the latest standards.

total-play Ltd was already known to the club, having upgraded the facility’s netting back in 2015; installing new HD panel netting with skirting and batting curtains. Impressed with the result the club approached them immediately to discuss full refurbishment, with the company recommending removal of all the old surfacing, shock pads and deteriorated internal timber framework before regrading and topping up the aggregate base; then fitting new shock pads and surfacing throughout the facility. The netting system from the 2015 upgrade was still in excellent condition, so was to be retained and refitted on the revived base.

Based on this, total-play provided a quote to support funding applications, with the club successfully bidding for a Landfill Grant toward the project. Funding in place, work started on site in early 2020, with total-play’s in-house team first removing the base timber framework from the previous facility and expanding the surface area to generate even, full-width surface levels. With new concrete edging installed and the aggregate based topped up and re-levelled, the shock pads were fitted followed by full width carpets in total-play’s ‘natural pitch colour’ (NPC) with blue borders and green surrounds; one lane featuring contrasting training lines.

Club captain & Chairman of the Old Hill Trust, Jonathan Wright, says:

I’d happily recommend total-play to clubs looking to refurbish practice net facilities. Communication throughout the project was great; they are a truly professional outfit and the installation guys were very helpful & efficient. The finished system has had a hugely positive response – it takes the burden of practice away from the main grass square and the Juniors are especially getting a lot of use out of it which has, in turn, attracted more Junior members.
