Natural Turf Cricket Square Restoration

Brief:
Prescribe and carry out a comprehensive programme of end of season works to help alleviate issues on the square with the aim of physically improving the table for the future.

TP Solution:
For over seven years, total-play had been appointed to undertake end of season maintenance tasks at Nuneaton CC and support the club’s grounds management team. However, in autumn 2012 it became apparent that a more comprehensive programme of works would be required to help alleviate issues with the surface.

total-play identified issues including a high percentage of the wrong grass species and a thick organic matter layer; the combination of which compromised playability. To help rectify this and ensure better performance of the table, total-play’s managing director, David Bates, recommended carrying out square restoration works as defined in total-play’s natural cricket table processes framework. A tailored programme of a tailored programme fraise mowing, surface levelling, sward establishment and change of top dressing was prescribed, with total-play carrying out all works in a single day at the end of the 2012 playing season. The square was ready for action again in spring 2013.

“We noticed a big difference in the square during the 2013 season. The works David proposed evidently did the trick and I’d recommend total-play as natural turf advisors to any club looking to improve their surface – the fact that they also have the in-house expertise to physically carry out the works is also a big bonus.”
Dave Button, Nuneaton CC’s Head Groundman
